The nine TREE principles

Improving the remote employee experience starts with knowing which principle is weakest. Here's what each one means in a distributed company, and what getting it right looks like.

Trust

Trust is the operating system of remote work: the shared belief that people will do good work without anyone watching them do it. At a remote or hybrid company it has to be designed through clear expectations, transparent decisions and accountability for results, not replaced with activity monitoring.

In Gallup's September 2025 study, only 54% of managers of remote workers strongly agreed they trust their team to be productive remotely, and 57% of employees said they feel trusted.

Responsibility

Responsibility is the two-way agreement at the center of remote work. The company owes people the resources, clarity and psychological safety to do their best work; people owe the company ownership of their results.

Attract

Attract is how a remote or hybrid company earns the attention of people who fit its work and its culture, and it starts long before a job is posted.

Hire

Hire is the selection process, and at a distributed company it has to be structured, consistent and fair for candidates the team may never meet in person.

For hybrid companies: decide in advance which steps happen in person and why, so location doesn't become an unspoken hiring criterion.
